My first #DNC experience was absolutely amazing! A

My first #DNC experience was absolutely amazing! As a delegate for the State of Ohio, I was fully invested in making the most of the jam packed week of events in Chicago!

From the conference to the caucus meetings and receptions-I stayed on the go meeting people from all over the country who are focused on educating voters and electing Kamala Harris @Kamala HQ as the 47th President of the United States of America!

OHIO - we got a task ahead of us: (1) we have to re-elect Sherrod Brown to the US Senate; (2) we’re the ONLY state in the union that has the opportunity to flip our Supreme Court by electing Justice Melody, Justice Michael Donnelly & Judge Lisa Forbes; (3) there are over 30 Judges, State Representatives & County Seats - including yours truly 😉 that are also on the ballot & (4) a ballot initiative to finally end gerrymandering and another that will improve transit and expand sidewalks, trails & bikeways.

I know it sounds like a lot but the stakes are high. I wholeheartedly believe that Ohio is not RED but RIGGED. So lets show this country what we can do when we organize and show up to cast our vote up & down the ballot this November. Because when OHIO fights- WE WIN!

This weekend I hosted my 2nd Annual Grits & Grace Women’s Empowerment Brunch, an event that is designed to celebrate, uplift and empower women to live in purpose and on purpose.

Grits & Grace is an evolution of my heart’s work to empower and uplift young girls and women in our community. I am unrelentless in my advocacy and my current mission to fight on behalf of the most vulnerable amongst us, which includes women because in order for us to realize the full potential of our economy and our society, we must provide an opportunity for the full power of women to be unlocked.

My team and I were able to visit vibrant community-building celebrations in Burwick and Linwood Park, and visited Driving Park before the rain came down!

We had productive conversations and were graced by a wonderful orchestra performance in Linwood Park, while building a corn hole set!

Today, July 9th, 2024 is Black Women’s Equal Pay

Today, July 9th, 2024 is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day! On average, Black women make 66 cents to every dollar earned by non-Hispanic white men. This is unacceptable.

Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is not only a set of jarring statistics, it also represents the economic challenges and systemic barriers that Black women encounter. These barriers hinder their ability to achieve economic security, advance in their careers, and build wealth.

As a Black woman, this issue is near and dear to my heart. Let’s use this day not just to raise awareness but also to take concrete steps towards closing the pay gap and advancing economic justice for Black women.

On March 1st, the City of Columbus’s Salary History Ban went into effect. Thanks to the hard work of @lourdesforcolumbus Columbus employers are now banned from inquiring about a job applicant’s current or previous salary. This legislation prevents employers from unfairly considering factors such as historical inequalities and biases in hiring decisions. Learn more: https://www.salaryhistoryban.com

Happy National Crown Day! 👑
Today we celebrate the history and art that is held in the hair of Black people.

On July 3rd, 2019 the first statewide CROWN ACT legislation passed in California with the intent to create a respectful and open world for natural hair.

Shortly after, in December of 2020, my former colleague councilmember Priscilla Tyson and I, passed the CROWN ACT to include hair discrimination as an extension to race discrimination.

However, more can and must be done to protect natural hair.

By the age 10, our Black girls are being impacted by hair discrimination, with 66% of Black girls in majority-white schools reporting hair discrimination. This bias follows Black women in the work place with 1 in 5 Black women between the ages 25-34 getting sent home from work due to their hair.

Ohio could be the 25th state to pass the CROWN Act. Thanks to the consistent work of Rep. @juanita_brent and local Black, female organizers, HB178, Ohio’s Crown Act has passed in the House and is within the Ohio Senate.

The hair of Black people, especially Black women, holds so much history and beauty. Black people should not be penalized for how they naturally show up in the world, from losing in career and educational opportunities due to societal oppression.

Today I was joined by four wonderful young ladies from Black Girls Rising Inc. ( @bgrpromise ) to recognize Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.

In 2024, it is estimated that on average that Black women make 69 cents for every dollar earned by White men; and we must equip and create a future where this disparity no longer exists.

As a the only black woman councilmember on City Council this is an issue especially important to me. My colleagues and I have taken steps to address the issue of pay inequity. The Salary History Ban led by Councilmember Barroso de Padilla takes a historic step to address the inequities for people of all backgrounds.

Black Girls Rising, Inc. is dedicated to engaging Black girls in diverse capacities to reach their full potential through research, advocacy, and career opportunities. With the mission of to place all Black girls at Promise, by serving as a catalyst for change that improves outcomes for African American girls and their families. Black Girls Rising, Inc. uplifts excellence in all of their girls.

An example of Black Girl Rising, Inc.’s impact is the sending of four of their graduating seniors to New York to present papers on Equity and Leadership issues affecting the quality of life for Black girls at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and Girls; and Toniyah Taylor has her paper referenced by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his speech!

I will be hosting two public hearings to share upcoming housing legislation. This will include the Vacant and Foreclosure Registry; The Relocation Code Policy; and provide updates to the Housing For All Legislative package.

The first hearing will be VIRTUAL on Tuesday, July 2nd at 12:30pm. Community members can view the hearing on WebEx and the City of Columbus YouTube.

The second hearing will be IN PERSON on Wednesday, July 10th in Council Chambers (Columbus City Hall, 90 West Broad street, Columbus, 43215).
