Policy

Prevention

As the next Franklin County Prosecution, I will focus on prevention as a key plank in confronting and disrupting youth violence. Youth violence is a public health challenge that affects thousands of young people in all communities each day. It’s a vicious cycle that is linked to negative health and well-being outcomes and disproportionately impacts communities of color. It doesn’t have to be this way. Addressing the short- and long-term consequences of violence strains community resources and limits the resources that communities can use to address other needs. Youth violence CAN be prevented.

As the next Franklin County Prosecutor, I am committed to creating safer communities through the implementation of innovative policies that seek to prevent, address and reduce the occurrence of violent crime in Franklin County. The traditional approach to prosecution has over-relied on criminal convictions and incarceration to combat crime despite the decades of research that have failed to show a correlation between aggressive, antiquated policies and the reduction of violence in the United States.

As the next Franklin County Prosecutor, I intend to hold violent offenders accountable. I will also work to improve public safety by evaluating the social drivers of violence (i.e., poverty, Covid19). In collaboration with other agencies and community organizations, I will work to (1) create violence reduction initiatives paired with social services and peer-to-peer counseling, and (2) increasing the number of diversion programs ensuring that people can get access to mental health treatment and substance abuse services.
